If you have an employment gap it will definitely come up during an interview so itโ€™s better to have something in mind to explain.

An employment gap in your resume doesnโ€™t have to be the kiss of death. So letโ€™s first understand what an employment gap is.

Employment gaps are periods when you have not been employed. The length of your employment gap may be a few months or several years, but either way, it could make your resume less attractive to an employer.

Employment gaps can occur voluntarily or involuntarily (e.g., downsizing, layoff), and they bring certain risks to your resume if they are not addressed properly in your cover letter and/or resume

So here are a few answers that you can use to explain the year gap in your resume

[1] Reason โ€“ If you were laid off.

Explanation:
My former employer underwent a restructuring that resulted in my position being eliminated. To be honest, it was a difficult time, my favorite part of my last job was being able to work with such talented individuals and gain an appreciation for how important teamwork is. I am looking forward to the opportunity to apply those experiences in my next job

[2] Reason โ€“ If you left the workforce for your family.

Explanation:
Due to a medical emergency in my family, I had to be there for them. During that time, I knew that I wanted to return to work but couldnโ€™t until my family was settled. But now Itโ€™s time for me to get back to my work and I am looking forward to working with you.

[3] Reason โ€“ If you were fired.

Explanation:
The company and I had different explanations. In reflecting on the experience I realize there are some things I could have done differently. I learned a great deal, and I am excited about the opportunity to bring that maturity to my next job.

[4] Reason โ€“ If you took time off due to personal reasons.

Explanation:
I was able to take some time off work last year, and it proved to be the best decision Iโ€™ve ever made. It gave me a chance to focus on my own mental health, and prepare myself for coming challenges. I am more excited about this position than any other Iโ€™ve applied for, as itโ€™s exactly what Iโ€™m looking for right now.

Wishing You All the Best!
